Rackham was born in London in 1867. He studied art at the Lambeth School of Art and the Royal Academy Schools. After graduating, he worked as a freelance illustrator for various magazines and newspapers. In 1893, he published his first book of illustrations, a collection of fairy tales by the Brothers Grimm.
