The author, Professor Martti Koskenniemi, argues that the concept of sovereignty was not simply imposed on non-Western societies by European powers, but rather that it was a contested and negotiated concept that was shaped by both Western and non-Western actors. In particular, Koskenniemi highlights the role of anti-colonial movements in shaping the development of international law.

Imperialism, Sovereignty, and the Making of International Law is a major contribution to the study of international law and imperialism. It is a must-read for anyone interested in the history of international law, the relationship between law and politics, and the role of imperialism in shaping the modern world.
