Riding the Surge at Combat Hospital in Iraq
By T.M. Christiansen
In the heart of Baghdad, during the height of the Iraq War, a military hospital became a refuge for the wounded and a sanctuary for the weary. Inside its walls, a US Army chaplain witnessed firsthand the horrors of war and the indomitable spirit of those who served.

In his gripping and unforgettable memoir, Riding the Surge at Combat Hospital in Iraq, T.M. Christiansen recounts his experiences as a chaplain at the 34th Combat Support Hospital in Baghdad from 2007-2008. With vivid prose and raw emotion, he paints a vivid picture of life at the hospital, where the constant threat of violence was punctuated by moments of unexpected grace and humor.
Christiansen's account is a deeply personal one, and he does not shy away from sharing his own struggles with the trauma and moral challenges of war. He writes about the guilt he felt when he could not save a patient, the anger he felt at the senseless violence, and the fear he felt when he was targeted by insurgents. But through it all, he never lost his faith in the human spirit.
Riding the Surge at Combat Hospital in Iraq is more than just a war memoir. It is a story of courage, resilience, and the power of hope in the darkest of times. Christiansen's writing is honest, compassionate, and ultimately uplifting. His book is a must-read for anyone interested in the human cost of war, and for anyone who wants to understand the indomitable spirit of those who serve.
